VALE DAVID ROLLO ANDERSON
One of Leichhardt Rowing Club’s most recognised oarsmen and Olympian passed away in Wollongong Hospital on 5th November last, aged 93 years.Widowed with three children, Barry Graham and Wendy, and six grandchildren, he gave a personal account, together with Forbes Carlisle, on the development of the “Guinea Pig” experience under Professor Frank Cotton at Leichhardt Rowing Club’s Annual “Old Boys” Day, prior to Covid.
His daughter Wendy Laidlaw also an Australian Olympian, represented in Basket Ball in 1984.
David was the last surviving member of the 1952 Australian Eight Oared Bronze Medal crew at Helsinki, behind the United States and Russia. The names of fellow crew members Tinning, Chapman, Greenwood, Williamson, Finlay, Pain and Cayser (Cox Chessel) with David at 4, are forever in the history of International Rowing.
From 1948, and winning the First Eight with Sydney High School; Olympian in 1952, Empires Games in 1954, Coxed Four (Gold), Cox-less Pairs (Bronze), Olympian again in 1956 in the cox-less four, to his retirement from the sport in 1957, David’s most amazing career included representing NSW in the Kings Cup from 1950- 1957. Other International competition involved New Zealand and the Henley Royal.
David’s retirement as Associate Professor and Dean of Education at Wollongong University, did not stop his interest in Science and wellbeing with his exercises either on a rowing machine or early morning walk on Wollongong beach. In his 70’s he commenced single sculling and competed in the NSW Masters Championships at the Sydney International Regatta Centre, representing Leichhardt.
David was a great member of the Leichhardt Union of Rowers, and a regular attendee at the Club House on special occasions.

Australian Sports Foundation Project.
Have you wanted to make a donation to support youth rowing in NSW and receive a tax deduction for your donation?
Now you can.
The NSW Union of Rowers Inc has registered a project with the Australian Sports Foundation, to raise funds to support youth rowing in NSW. Through this partnership with ASF, donations of $2 or more are tax deductible.
With the cancellation of most regattas due to Covid and poor weather conditions this year we have been unable to chat with you and seek your support personally. So now we need your help more than ever to raise funds to continue the Union’s support for aspiring young rowers through the scholarship fund. The Union has awarded 176 scholarships since the scheme began in 1992.
The Australian Sports Foundation Ltd (ASF) was established by the Australian government to assist organisations in raising funds through donations for the development of sport in Australia.
In accordance with the ASF’s listing in the Income Tax Assessment Act (1997) (div 30, S30 – 90) donations of $2 or over to the ASF are tax deductible. ASF will issue official tax receipts for any donation of $2 and over to substantiate your taxable claim.
To make a tax-deductible donation to the NSW Union of Rowers project and support the rowing youth of NSW, visit the Australian Sports Foundation website: https://asf.org.au/donate/nsw-ur-junior-athlete-scholarships/
